A Documentary Directed & Produced by Javier Sanchez Assistant Producer Rick Leal

2021 Silver Telly Award | Individual Documentary

October 11, 2019

Javier Sanchez is the director and producer of The Story of Big Tex, a documentary exploring the history and legacy of one of Texas’s most iconic symbols. Since 1952, Big Tex—the towering cowboy—has stood as the beloved ambassador of the annual State Fair of Texas, welcoming millions of visitors each year.

Originally created in 1949 as a giant Santa Claus in the small town of Kerens, Texas, Big Tex was later transformed into the legendary cowboy that has become synonymous with Texas pride and tradition. The film introduces viewers to Rusty Fitzgerald, who has cared for Big Tex for more than 21 years. Rusty ensures that every detail—from his clothing and hat to his boots—is perfectly in place before Big Tex is raised at Big Tex Circle prior to the fair’s opening.

In 2019 alone, Big Tex welcomed more than 2.5 million visitors to the State Fair of Texas, continuing his role as a larger-than-life symbol of community, history, and celebration.

Dallas Freelance Video covers all news all the time, everywhere.

Global Coverage for Tennis Channel | Dubai, Rome, Paris, London, Normandy, Acapulco, Eastbourne and Milan.

I had the honor of covering most of Kobe Bryant’s NBA career. Over the years, I interviewed Kobe in both English and Spanish whenever the L.A. Lakers visited the Dallas Mavericks. He was always eager to practice and refine his conversational Spanish vocabulary.

This is the only photo I have with Kobe. It was taken after a postgame locker room interview by a Dallas newspaper reporter. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have this moment in my photo archives.

Thank You Kobe R.I.P. #8 #24
